Unpaid or voluntary posts - carers

Ian and Genna are two of our youngest volunteer carers.  Genna came to us for 20 weeks as a social care student
with Adam Smith College.  When her placement ended in May 2007 she decided to carry on as a volunteer at our
Tuesday centre in Scott Road.   In the longer term, she would like a career with the police.   Ian is also part of the Tuesday team at Scott Road.  He came to us between jobs and really enjoys his  voluntary work with us.  Although Ian is also looking for paid work, he says that he plans to remain at Age Concern as a volunteer.

It is the role of our volunteer carers to help create a warm and welcoming environment for our members, and other volunteers.  They help to make sure that our members are treated as individuals and are given choices.

Their main tasks are to:

  • greet our members when they arrive

  • assist with coats and jackets - if required

  • assist members to and from the tables - if required

  • set and clear tables at breakfast and lunch time

  • help our members to take part in activities and games

  • liaise with the centre organiser or keyworker to make sure that people's needs are being met

  • raise any worries regarding members with the centre organiser or keyworker

  • attend support and information-giving sessions as required

  • carry out all tasks in line with Age Concern's operational manual.
